The convention center's favorite neighbor
The Hilton San Diego Bayfront is where convention programming goes after the exhibit hall closes. With 1,190 rooms, more than 170,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space, and a lawn that runs down to the bay, it hosts everything from satellite sessions to sponsor dinners for shows happening next door at the San Diego Convention Center. I have photographed events here, which matters more than it sounds: knowing where the sun sets on the Promenade, and which ballroom doors a group actually enters through, saves the first thirty minutes of every shoot.
One property, three kinds of light
Bayfront daylight on the lawn, controlled ballroom lighting in the Sapphire, and mixed hotel ambient everywhere between. Each needs different settings and different instincts, and a program usually moves through all three in a day. That is the job. My conference coverage runs $1,195 for a half day and $1,980 for a full day, and a headshot station in the pre-function space turns badge-pickup traffic into 20-30 finished headshots an hour.

- Yes. Corporate receptions, conference programming and evening events, indoors and out on the bay side. It is one of the venues I work most, because so much convention center programming spills into it.
- What is the Sapphire Ballroom like to photograph?
- Generous. At 34,000 square feet it is the largest pillar-free ballroom in San Diego, which means clean sight lines from any corner: no columns eating your wide shot of the general session. Ceiling height gives lighting designers room to work, and what they build, I expose for.
- How close is the hotel to the San Diego Convention Center?
- Next door. The Hilton Bayfront sits directly beside the convention center's Hall H end, which is why so many shows book it for receptions, board dinners and satellite sessions. One photographer can cover your SDCC session and your Hilton reception without a car.
- What do you charge for an event at the Hilton Bayfront?
- The published rates apply: $1,195 for a half day up to 4 hours, $1,980 for a full day up to 8, commercial license included. A staffed headshot station is $2,450 half day or $3,950 full day at 20-30 people per hour.
